Why Rovinj?

Rovinj’s unique blend of Venetian architecture, vibrant art scene, and crystal-clear waters make it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a mix of culture, relaxation, and adventure. Rovinj is one of those places we keep going back to. We’ve been here three times in 12 years.

Where to stay?

The first thing you need to do is decide what you prefer. Do you want to stay close to the old town or one of the beaches?

If you decide you’d rather stay in the old town, you’ll find plenty of apartments and hotels there. You should also be aware that there are no parking spaces directly in the old town. Just a note on parking: it’s quite expensive in Rovinj. You can find all the info you need about parking zones and prices on the official website of the Rovinj tourist board, which will help you plan your trip. The parking rush starts around 6 pm when people are heading out for dinner.

I’d say the best thing to do is stay close to the unique vibe of the beautiful old town of Rovinj and get lost in one of the narrow alleyways.

If you’re looking to stay closer to one of Rovinj’s beaches, it’s probably best to go for one on the northern or southern side, as it’s more suited to families with kids. There’s a great choice of apartments and hotels in both regions.
Having already spent a week on both sides, in my opinion, the northern side is the better option because it offers a beautiful view of the old town. One of the recommended hotels is the Family Hotel Amarin.

Beaches of Rovinj

The most popular beaches in the northern region of Rovinj

Borik is a well-maintained local beach for families with children, about 170 meters long. The beach has comfortable and safe access to the sea for people with disabilities or reduced mobility. Equipped with sanitary facilities/lavatories, showers, changing rooms, etc.

The beach Amarin is located in the resort Amarin, only 3 km northern from the center of Rovinj. The beach stretches along the coast and offers a great choice of places for swimming, from those nice pebbly to the rocky and paved beaches, where everyone can find their place. Amarin beach is awarded a Blue flag, which is a symbol of high quality and service. On the beach, there is a place for renting deck chairs, sunshades, pedal boats, scooters, and sailboards, and you can also have a beach volleyball playground.

The most popular beaches in the southern region of Rovinj

The bay Cuvi is located 3 kilometers south of the town of Rovinj-Rovigno and has one of the most visited beaches in Rovinj. The beach is recently arranged and dredged with fine gravel, and parts of it are rocky. An additional advantage of the Bay Cuvi is the number of cafes along the beach, the closeness of resort Villas Rubin, and the service it offers. Thanks to a rich gastronomic offer near the beach, you can stay here the entire day and take a rest. The beach is ideal for families with small kids who can carelessly have fun in shallow water.

There are also many swimming spot around the old town.

Rovinj old town from the sea

The Island of St. Catherine is one of the most beautiful islands of Rovinj’s archipelago. It is situated only 100 meters distance from the town center. The most visited beaches on Catherine Island are located on the eastern side of the island and they are mostly stony with some easily accessible and attractive bays.

Things to Do in Rovinj

Explore the Old Town

Step back in time as you wander through the cobbled streets of Rovinj’s Old Town. Admire the pastel-colored buildings, visit the St. Euphemia Church, and browse the local art galleries and boutiques.

Tip: Don’t forget to climb to the top of the bell tower for panoramic views of the town and surrounding islands. The entrance to the bell tower is just 4€, and then you can climb 189 steps to reach 41 meters higher up.

Hop on a tourist train

The train runs between Camp Amarin and Rovinj, so you can choose this mode of transport instead of using a car. The only thing to bear in mind is that you might not be able to get on the 6 o’clock train before dinner time, as it’s pretty common for the train to be full at the departure station. There’s still room outside of the peak period, though. You’ll find the schedule on the provider’s website.

Visit the Rovinj Islands

Hop on a boat and explore the Rovinj Islands, a group of 14 islands off the coast of Rovinj. Swim in secluded coves, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and discover hidden caves and beaches. Make sure to visit the popular islands of St. Andrew and St. Catherine for a day of sun and relaxation.
If you’re interested in other boat tours, there are sunset tours and city tours (which last an hour) as well as the chance to watch dolphins, and tour to Limski fjord. It is good to see Rovinj from the sea, because usually you see this beautiful town from a different perspective.

Indulge in Istrian Cuisine

Treat your taste buds to the flavors of Istrian cuisine in Rovinj. Sample fresh seafood, truffles, olive oil, and local wines at one of the many restaurants and konobas (taverns) in town. Don’t miss trying traditional dishes like Istrian pršut (prosciutto) and fuzi pasta.
I can recommend the following restaurants: Pierino Restaurant, Tunaholic Fish Bar, Fish House Rovinj, La Fondiaria Restaurant.

Visit Venice

Yes, it is possible. You can visit Venice in a one-day programme. The boat departs early in the morning from the main port in Rovinj. The cruise lasts approximately 3 hours. Upon arrival in Venice, you can explore one of the most romantic cities in the world. Take a gondola ride across the lagoon or wander the narrow streets at your leisure. Sample Italy’s famous cuisine in charming restaurants or explore the ancient piazzas, beautiful palaces, art-filled churches and galleries that perfectly illustrate the city’s romantic atmosphere.

Summary

Basically, I don’t return to the same place more than once, because there is so much to see and do in the world that I can’t take it all in. Rovinj is somehow an exception and I have never regretted coming back here. The atmosphere, the charm of the old town is so enchanting, we love to spend hours in the narrow streets, that for us Rovinj is unforgettable. We are planning a fourth visit, when we will stay in the Old Town for a few days to fully enjoy its atmosphere from morning till night.
