Accommodation in Tuscany: Which is Right for You?

Tuscany is a popular destination for many travelers due to its picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and delicious cuisine. However, choosing the right accommodation can be overwhelming with the variety of options available. From luxury boutique hotels to cozy bed and breakfasts, Tuscany has something for every type of traveler. In this article, we will explore the different types of accommodation in Tuscany to help you decide which option is best for you.

Hotel

One of the most important decisions when planning a trip is where to stay. There are many options when it comes to accommodation, but one of the most common choices is to book a hotel room. But why is this a good thing, and what are the potential drawbacks?

Advantages:

Comfort and service: Staying in a hotel can be a comfortable and carefree experience. The staff will go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable and there are often amenities available.

Services and amenities: Most hotels offer a variety of amenities such as a fitness center, swimming pool, restaurant, and room service. These services help to make our trip more enjoyable and relaxing.

Safety and reliability: Hotels are usually located in safe neighborhoods and have security measures in place to reassure travelers. Reservations are also reliable and it is rare to have a problem with the room you have booked.

Disadvantages:

Limited freedom: When we stay in a hotel, we sometimes have limited options. For example, we may not be able to cook our food in our room, and we may be restricted in certain activities by hotel rules.

Lack of anonymity: Staying in a hotel can sometimes deprive you of an authentic experience of the local culture and way of life, as hotels are usually chosen by tourists. This can reduce the adventurous nature of our trip.

Although there are many advantages to booking a hotel room, it is important to consider the disadvantages as well. However, depending on the purpose of the trip and our individual preferences, the hotel can still be an ideal choice for many travelers. It is always important for travelers to consider every option and find the accommodation that best suits their needs and comfort.

Bed and Breakfasts

For a more intimate and authentic experience, consider staying at a bed and breakfast in Tuscany. These small, family-run establishments offer cozy and charming accommodations, often in historic buildings or countryside homes.

One of the main benefits of staying at a bed and breakfast is the personal touch. The owners are often locals who can provide insider tips on the best places to visit and eat in the area. They may also offer homemade breakfasts featuring local ingredients, giving you a taste of traditional Tuscan cuisine.

Apartment

Another popular option is to rent an apartment. But why choose an apartment instead of a traditional hotel?

Advantages:

More space and privacy: Apartments are usually larger than traditional hotel rooms and may have a separate bedroom, living room, and fully equipped kitchen. This can be particularly beneficial for longer stays or for families who need more space.

A more homely feel: Staying in an apartment makes it easier to feel at home. The private space and fully-equipped kitchen allow for the comfort of eating at home, and the style of furnishings also helps to make our trip more personal.

More flexible options: Many apartments have washing machines and dryers, which can be convenient for longer stays.

Disadvantages:

Lack of services: Apartments usually do not offer the same services as traditional hotels, such as breakfast and cleaning. This means more independence and planning are required when traveling.

Limited security: While many apartment complexes have security measures such as intercoms or guarded parking, some may be less secure than traditional hotels.

Fewer social spaces: Because apartments tend to have only private spaces, there are fewer opportunities for socializing and meeting other travelers than in a hotel.

Apartments are an excellent option for those who want to experience local life and are looking for more space and comfort during their trip. Despite their drawbacks, apartments are an attractive option for many travelers because they provide a more comfortable and flexible place to stay.

Villas

If you’re looking for a lavish and exclusive experience, renting a luxury villa in Tuscany might be the perfect choice for you. These stunning properties often come with private pools, spacious gardens, and breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside. Whether you’re traveling with your family, friends, or on a romantic getaway, a luxury villa offers privacy and comfort like no other.

Agritourism

Agriturismo is one of the most characteristic manifestations of the Italian rural lifestyle, which is being discovered by more and more travelers. But why choose an agriturismo or farmhouse instead of a traditional city hotel or apartment?

Advantages:

Authentic experience: Agriturismo allows travelers to come into direct contact with the rural lifestyle and culture. Many agriturismos also operate as farms where people can take part in agricultural activities such as picking grapes or tending olive trees. You can buy local products produced on the farm, such as olive oil, wine, and cheese.

Connection with nature: The agriturismo is often located in a rural setting, away from the noise of the city and the crowds of tourists. This allows travelers to get closer to nature and enjoy the peace.

Fresh, local food: An agriturismo often offers locally grown, fresh food from local producers. This allows travelers to taste authentic local cuisine and enjoy quality food.

Disadvantages:

Amenities are more limited compared to hotels.

Away from town centers and attractions: Agriturismos are usually located in rural areas, away from cities and main attractions. This means that you may have to plan a longer journey to reach city centers or tourist attractions. You will need a car to get around.

Agriturismo offers a unique experience for travelers who want to explore rural life and local culture. Although there are drawbacks, the authentic experience and connection with nature are often worth the differences and allow travelers to get closer to the Italian rural lifestyle.
In principle, agriturismo offers accommodation to suit all standards and needs, the only limit is your budget.

Our Experience

We stayed a short distance from San Gimignano in an agriturismo accommodation (called Poderi Arcangelo), where we rented an apartment (see images above), but also took advantage of the meals provided by the accommodation, in our case a 3-course dinner. Authentic Italian food was served in the evenings, accompanied by local/owned wines. I haven’t had spaghetti bolognese as good as that since.
Agroturismo has been a good experience for us, with all its advantages and disadvantages, we have enjoyed the silence, the pool, the view of the town of San Gimignano, we have accepted the distance and the occasional little bugs that come with being close to nature.

Pricing and Seasonality in Tuscany

Accommodation prices in Tuscany can vary significantly depending on the season and location. High season typically runs from June to September, with peak prices in July and August. During these months, expect to pay:

Hotels:

  • Budget hotels: €80-120 per night
  • Mid-range hotels: €150-250 per night
  • Luxury hotels: €300+ per night

Bed & Breakfasts:

  • Standard rooms: €60-100 per night
  • Superior rooms: €100-150 per night

Apartments:

  • Studio apartments: €70-120 per night
  • One-bedroom apartments: €100-180 per night
  • Two-bedroom apartments: €150-250 per night

Villas:

  • Small villas (2-4 people): €200-400 per night
  • Medium villas (4-8 people): €400-800 per night
  • Luxury villas: €1000+ per night

Agriturismos:

  • Basic rooms: €60-90 per night
  • Apartments: €100-200 per night
  • Luxury farmhouses: €250+ per night

During the shoulder season (April-May and September-October), prices typically drop by 20-30%. Low season (November-March, excluding Christmas and New Year) offers the best values, with prices often 40-50% lower than peak season. However, some facilities, especially swimming pools and certain agriturismos, might be closed during winter months.

For the best value, consider booking your stay during the shoulder season when the weather is still pleasant, tourist crowds are smaller, and accommodation prices are more reasonable. If you’re planning to visit during high season, booking at least 6 months in advance is recommended, especially for popular locations like Florence, Siena, or the Val d’Orcia region.

When deciding on accommodation in Tuscany,

it is important to consider your travel style, budget, and preferences. Here are some factors to consider when choosing between hotels, bed and breakfasts, agriturismos, and villas:

Budget
Hotels and villas tend to be the most expensive options, while bed and breakfasts and agriturismos offer more budget-friendly options. However, keep in mind that the amenities and services offered may vary between establishments, so be sure to do your research and compare prices.

Location
If you want to be in the heart of a bustling city like Florence or Siena, a hotel or bed and breakfast may be the best choice for you. If you prefer a more secluded and peaceful setting, an agriturismo or villa in the countryside may be a better fit.

Amenities
If you’re looking for a luxurious and pampering experience, a boutique hotel or villa may be the way to go. If you prefer a more low-key and authentic experience, a bed and breakfast or agriturismo may be a better fit.

Group Size
If you’re traveling with a group, a villa may be the most practical and cost-effective option. However, if you’re traveling solo or as a couple, a hotel or bed and breakfast may offer a more intimate and personalized experience.

No matter which type of accommodation you choose, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience in Tuscany. Whether you’re looking for luxury and charm, a cozy and authentic stay, or a home away from home, there is something for everyone in this beautiful region of Italy.
